Mizen Head occupies the tip of the Mizen Peninsula, one of five finger-like promontories jutting from West Cork into the Atlantic. The nearest settlements are Goleen (population 250) and Crookhaven, small fishing villages that serve as the last fuel and provisions stops before the headland. Cork Airport lies 130 kilometres northeast, roughly two hours by car through rural routes that narrow as they approach the coast. The geography here is terminal. Three Castles Head and Brow Head flank Mizen to the east, but where is Mizen Head in Ireland's coastal hierarchy matters less than what lies beyond it: open Atlantic for 4,800 kilometres until Newfoundland.
